AbstractThis study determined the degree to which beginning public school secondary teachers change along the authoritarian dimension and the relationship of certain possible causes of teacher authoritarian attitude changes to observed changes. A theory based on the concept of socialization was offered to explain the teacher attitude change. A research sample was composed of 86 beginning secondary school teachers in Seattle public schools in 1970-71, 34 principals, and 213 experienced teachers. The Minnesota Teacher Attitude Inventory measured permissive-authoritarian attitudes while further data concerning conditions related to the beginning teachers' experience was obtained by using questionnaires. Results of the data analysis supported some parts of the theory but required others to be rejected. Major observations were that a) the average change toward authoritarianism was probably too small to be of consequence, b) beginning teachers perceived their principals and the faculty of their school as being much more authoritarian than was the case, c) the beginning teachers' perceptions of their principals authoritarian attitudes was correlated with their changes of attitude, and d) the more authoritarian the attitude held by the beginning teacher at the start of the year, the less was the increase in authoritarianism that occurred during the year. A 58-item bibliography and appendixes with questionnaries are included. (Author/MJM)
