Abstract | The Bay Area Employer Policy Survey was designed to gather comprehensive data on employer policies and practices and to undertake an extensive analysis of variations in practices by industry size and other characteristics. The San Jose Metropolitan Area and the five-county San Francisco-Oakland Area were included in the study. A sample of 300 employers, representing about 20 percent of all nonfarm wage and salary workers in the area, was drawn from a universe of all industrial establishments employing 100 or more persons. Individual chapters examine the following policy areas: (1) employment, (2) location of industry, (3) technological change, (4) industrial relations structure and personnel departments, (5) recruitment, (6) selection practices, (7) promotion, (8) labor turnover, (9) wage policy and wage differentials, (10) training, and (11) employment projections. Numerous tables and the Bay Area Employer Policy Survey are appended. (BC) |
