Abstract | The many difficulties involved in diagnosing, classifying and treating alcoholics comprise the bulk of the report's content. The very specific social and medical needs of the alcoholic, coupled with personal, social and treatment agency barriers, are viewed as the major feasibility (for treatment outcome) factors. The report recommends six major treatment approaches: (1) acute detoxification; (2) chronic detoxification; (3) environmental manipulation; (4) supportive therapy; (5) internal change therapy; and (6) treatment for the counter-alcoholic. In the concluding chapter, a cooperative program concept for providing services to the alcoholic is preferred. A coordination of all needed services in an intensive comprehensive program is seen to be the only method from which successful rehabilitation can be expected. (TL) |
