AbstractScience lessons of fifteen teachers were tape recorded before their participation in a Science Curriculum Improvement Study (SCIS) summer workshop and again, later, while they were using SCIS materials. Later SCIS lessons of the 18 workshop participants were also recorded. All participants responded to instruments used to measure attitude (Minnesota Teacher Attitude Inventory), personality, (16 Personality Factor Questionnaire), and understanding of the processes of science (Science Process Test for Elementary Teachers), during the workshop and again the following April. Relationships between these variables and the type of questions asked in the classroom were investigated. Significant increases in the use of higher level (analysis) questions occurred, with a strong relationship between the change in process test scores and the proportion of high level questioning, although there was a negative correlation between teaching experience and change in questioning level. Degree of change on the process test was positively correlated with the teacher's college science background, but negatively with the teacher's age and experience. The only other significant relationship reported was between the process test scores and the Minnesota Teacher Attitude Inventory. (Author/AL)
