Abstract | Data from a large number of recent research studies are brought to bear on the problem of providing for the technical information needs of research and development projects. The importance of proper support by the technical staff is shown, and it is argued that the best way to couple the project team to information sources outside the organization is by an indirect route through key personnel among the laboratory's technical staff. Informal relations and physical location are shown to be important determinants of the structure of organizational communication networks. Informal relations can be developed through formation of project teams and inter-group transfers and loans. The effect of physical location on communications is especially strong and should be given serious consideration when designing research facilities. (Author) |
