AbstractThis study was designed to test the hypotheses that (1) pre-adolescent boys show greater growth in positive self-concept when subjected to an art counseling program than when they receive a traditional non-directive counseling program having the same goal; and (2) this difference will continue to exist on into adolescence. Thirty boys who had just completed the sixth grade were subjects for the study. One group of fifteen boys received art counseling; the other group of fifteen boys received only traditional non-directive counseling. The art counseling group was unaware of the goals of art counseling and viewed each session as an art class they had elected. The treatment took place over a daily eight weeks summer session. A follow-up of both groups was conducted fourteen months later. A multivariate analysis of covariance with ten criteria--ten subscales on the "Tennessee Self-Concept Scale"--and ten covariates--pre-test scores on the subscales--was performed on the data. The results supported both hypotheses. (Author)
