| Abstract | A history of prefabrication in Britain from the first Victorian innovations in wood, glass, and cast iron, through the developments of the inter-war years and the buildings of the immediate post-war period to the 'system building' of today is presented. The study is not confined to houses and flats but examines the influences of non-traditional building methods on the design of railway, farm and school buildings. Activities of various government and other committees and the influence that these bodies, as well as early housing legislation, had on the course of prefabrication is discussed. Prefabrication is presented as a history of building innovations from the point of view of an architect and historian. (TC) |
