Abstract | Research indicates the existence of a relationship between the level of visual perceptual skills in the first grade and academic success in later grades. Special visual-motor training was given to some 275 primary school children with a like number of children acting as a control group. The control group was one grade ahead of the experimental group. Testing at the end of the first year of this study showed the control group scoring significantly higher on academic tests than the experimental group, this result being expected because of the extra year of formal education received by the control group. Test results after the second year showed no significant differences between the two groups, but the experimental group children appeared to have the faster growth rate. At the end of 3 years, testing again resulted in no significant differences between the two groups. Slower children seemed to have benefited from the special training, whereas the other children generally had not. (WD) |
