AbstractThe achievements in language arts and social studies of eighth-grade students in a junior high school with a team-teaching organization were compared to those of similar students in another junior high school using departmental organization in eighth-grade. Data on the 197 students in the experimental group and the 262 students in the control group were collected using a test of mental ability and a battery of tests of basic skills in reading comprehension, vocabulary, language skills, and work-study skills. No difference in social studies achievement was found between the two groups at the .05 level of significance, but differences existed in language arts achievement at the same level of significance. The most important conclusion of the study was that team teaching was significantly more effective than was a departmental organization in producing achievement in the language arts. (Author/LH)
