| Abstract | The Medical Information Project (MIP) purpose to select the right type of audiovisual equipment for communicating new medical information to general practitioners of medicine was hampered by numerous difficulties. There is a lack of uniformity and standardization in audiovisual equipment that amounts to chaos. There is no evaluative literature on such equipment and no better place to turn than to the "Audio-Visual Equipment Directory" which, essential though it is to this purpose, has many shortcomings. No machine listed in it, or discovered by an other survey, meets the requirements of MIP for individual programed instruction audiovisual (color slides and records) presentation. Factors that count in the selection of an audiovisual machine include the human factor, reliability, safety, technical requirements, cost, manufacturing, distribution, and maintenance considerations. The lack of standards raises problems of conversion which, allied with resulting manufacturing difficulties, makes costs prohibitive. Servicing and maintenance constitute a chronic problem which may be solved by the adoption of removable modules. Modules may also solve the problem of adapting a machine to different uses. Commercial machines and the test machine are illustrated and described. (GO) |
