AbstractThe chief components of Swedish formal adult education are (1) independent lectures, which stress popularization of public affairs and of selected aspects of culture, science, and technology; (2) the folk high schools, whose object is to impart to young adults a general and civic education; (3) special schools operated by the popular movements; and (4) study circles, which are fellowship groups that meet to pursue theoretical and practical study of particular subjects according to a predetermined plan. Lecture activities are organized and coordinated at several levels, and receive some government support; the study circles and folk high schools are largely government subsidized. Study circles, annually serving one out of ten adult Swedes, cover a broad range of subjects; fine arts and foreign languages have become especially popular. Lecture series, residential courses, mass media, libraries, correspondence study, and other programs supplement the study circles.
