| Abstract | This handbook introduces the important correspondences existing between English sounds and English spelling patterns. The lessons present the vowel sounds, one by one, along with systematically selected consonant sounds, and show how each sound or combination of sounds is usually spelled in English words. Irregularly spelled words are introduced gradually, their pronunciation indicated by means of familiar symbols that eliminate the need for phonetic notation. The rationale underlying the system of symbols used is presented in the Epilogue. The text may be used, however, without a special study of the rationale. In addition to introducing, illustrating, and explaining sounds and spelling patterns, each lesson provides practice in hearing, saying, reading, and writing words that contain the sound and letter combinations featured in that lesson or in earlier lessons. While the authors feel that the text "offers the greatest help to new students who are just beginning to learn English," the sections of facts and explanations may be used by more advanced students and by teachers of English as a second or foreign language, or by teachers of standard English as a second dialect.
