AbstractThis statewide study of the fireman's occupation was undertaken to (1) identify the duties and responsibilities for each rank in the fire service, (2) identify the training and educational requirements of each rank, (3) determine who is best qualified to give the necessary training and education required for each rank, (4) develop a comprehensive training program for all levels of the fire service, including specialized needs, (5) raise the competency and efficiency of the fire service through improved training and educational methods, (6) analyze services being rendered at the present time and determine if other services can be effectively rendered in the future, and (7) develop an organizational structure to implement the results of the study. Participants numbered 11,660 and represented 90 fire departments. Part I of the study was a survey of 377 tasks of firemen while Part II was a survey of fire department supervisorial, administrative, and management functions and responsibilities. The survey findings, presented in tabular form, constitute the bulk (333 pages) of the report. Fifty-two California junior colleges offer courses in fire sciences for students on a pre-entry basis as well as for employed fire service personnel. Two recent developments in the junior college programs are (1) recruit training for newly appointed personnel, and (2) training in basic skills on an off-campus basis. (DG)
