Abstract | THESE GUIDELINES FOR CLASSROOM TEACHERS OFFER SUGGESTIONS FOR TEACHING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS IN A MANNER TO REFLECT RECENT CHANGES IN CONTENT, TECHNIQUES, AND APPROACHES TO TEACHING MATHEMATICS. THE PURPOSES OF THESE GUIDELINES ARE (1) TO DETERMINE A DIRECTION FOR MATHEMATICS EDUCATION IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS OF DELAWARE, (2) TO PROVIDE A COMMON BASIS FOR THE MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM FOR THE CHILDREN, (3) TO PROVIDE A SOURCE OF INFORMATION FOR THE PLANNING OF INDIVIDUAL DISTRICT PROGRAMS, (4) TO ESTABLISH CRITERIA FOR A BALANCED CURRICULUM THROUGH WHICH TEACHERS MAY EVALUATE THEIR OWN INDIVIDUAL PROGRAMS, (5) TO DEVELOP A LOGICAL SEQUENTIAL PROGRAM FOR USE IN THE ELEMENTARY GRADES, AND (6) TO ENCOURAGE USE OF MATHEMATICAL LANGUAGE. RECOMMENDED APPROACHES AND METHODS OF PROCEDURE ARE EXPECTED TO LEAD TO THE FOLLOWING GOALS--(1) PROVIDING FOR INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES, (2) STRESSING PRINCIPLES RATHER THAN SPECIFICS, (3) BUILDING THE STUDENT'S CONFIDENCE IN HIS OWN DISCOVERY ABILITY AND CREATIVE THINKING, (4) DEVELOPING THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO ANALYZE VERBAL PROBLEMS AND TO TRANSLATE THESE INTO A FORM WHICH LEADS TO THEIR SOLUTION, AND (5) DEVELOPING AN ABILITY ON THE PART OF THE STUDENT TO COMMUNICATE HIS UNDERSTANDING.
