(Autorin). In this essay the life and work of Catherine Mulgrave (1827-1891) are summarized on the basis of available data which reveal the transnational biography of one of the first ever African women teachers in the context of formal schooling (so-called modern or Western type) in Sub-Sahara Africa. The historical reconstruction of her life and work are structured according to theoretical considerations of the world-systems analysis of Immanuel Wallerstein (1930-2019) interlinked with models of socialization theory. The article reveals a unique tricontinental and transcultural biography of an African female teacher of the 19th century between Africa, the Caribbean and Europe. (Author). |
