Abstract | When adolescence starts, sometimes even before it starts, the motivation for school work declines in almost all students. If actual models allow to predict relatively well problems of extreme demotivation, they don't really allow us to foresee less important decreases in motivation. The results highlight that the development of motivation for school work is only slightly linked to the students' personal elements or school background. Contextual elements like the quality of the social environment of the class or the teaching strategies chosen by the teachers for instance, can affect the students' changes of motivation for school work and effort.
