Abstract	DerAutor stellt einleitend fest, dass sich das japanische Bildungssystem gegenwärtig in einer umfassenden, alle Schultypen betreffenden Reformphase befindet. Die Probleme des traditionellen Systems (Vernachlässigung des Individuums, hoher Leistungsdruck) werden seit Jahrzehnten diskutiert. Reformen werden besonders vor dem Hintergrund der Internationalisierung erforderlich. Auffallend sind Tendenzen zur Deregulierung und Individualisierung, die sich in der Einführung von Wahlfächern an Schulen ausdrückem. Im Folgenden legt der Autor Bildungsreforminitiativen in der Bundesrepublik dar, um abschließend einen Vergleich durchzuführem. Trotz großer Unterschiede in den Bildungssystemen kristallisiert sich als Gemeinsamkeit heraus, dass beide Länder in der Vergangenheit von Diktaturen regiert wurden und diese ihnen Bildungssysteme überliefert haben, die schwierig zu reformieren sind. (DIPF/GS.). The ongoing Japanese educational reform - embracing all levels and types of schools - is indeed ambitious. On the other hand, despite sometimes radical rhetoric, many topics of the reform are not new at all and changes are proceeding slowly. There is, however, a general tendency of change towards more "individualization" , "deregulation". New Curricula greatly increase the number of subjects to be chosen by students, some especially demanding contents in mathematics and sciences are postponed from lower to higher grades, a new subject of' "integrated learning" is to be introduced which should enable each school to give more choice and opportunities for studying new fields. New optional supplementary classes for slow learners as well as special early adrnission to higher education for fast learners are planned to be introduced soon and a more individualized form of admission in generral has already been adopted by many higher education institutions. (...) In some respects tendencies seem to take different, sometimes opposing directions in Germany and Japan. Whereas, for example, Japan seems willing to reduce the overwhelming role of school process of children and young adults, in Germany, in contrast, a strengthening of this role seems to be on the agenda. (...) The history of being latecomers in industrialization including phases of adopting `modernizing dictatorships' produced certain roles and forms of schooling which, with regard to their original tasks, were very succe ssful, but have now become petrified and strongly opposed to change. In Germany this refers especially to forms, in Japan to functions and contents of the education system. But the question is how to systemize such "impressions trouvees" for comparison. (DIPF/Orig.).
