| Abstract | The aim of the paper is to provide a general survey of the central constituents of L2 speech production, i.e. attention, monitoring, and automatisation. First of all, some major findings regarding the various linguistic, interactive, and psychological functions of speech production will be presented. Thus, the central role of speaking for the L2 acquisition process becomes evident. Then the most important insights from both cognitive psychology and L2 acquisition research regarding attention - i.e. the activation of cognitive resources -, monitoring - i.e. the evaluation and control of one's own speech production -, and automatisation - i.e. the result of repeated action - will be summarized and discussed with respect to the research project presented in the volume in hand.
