Abstract | This volume reports the results of the second phase of the Civic Education Study conducted by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA). During 1999, researchers surveyed nearly 90,000 14-year-old students in 28 countries. Questionnaires were also administered to teachers and school heads. The content domains covered in the Phase 2 survey were identified during Phase 1 of the study (published in Civic education across countres: Twenty-four national case studies from the IEA Civic Education Project). These domains include Democracy and Citizenship, National Identity, and Social Cohesion and Diversity. This volume will give educators, policy-makers and the public information about what 14-year-old students know and think about democratic institutions and processes. It also provides a snapshot of the civic activities of young people and an indication of their intentions regarding future participation in civic affairs. (DIPF/orig.). |
