Abstract | Mistakes in article usage by Portuguese students of English were analysed and found to be typical of errors made by native speakers of other languages learning English. It was shown that the D(efinite) A( rticle) is used far less in English than in other European languages. The generic use of the DA is rare in English and it can generally only be used where the head noun has already been referred to or is contextually unique. Otherwise the indefinite article or a possessive or the plural of the noun without an article must be used instead. Limitations on the use of DA seem to be more extreme in English than in any other languages familiar to the author. (Verlag). |
