Abstract | School effectiveness research should be seen as a policy-relevant type of educational research, particularly in an era where the concern for quality in education is as great as it has ever been, and important reforms are going on in most countries. To what extent is this knowledge base coherent and supportive for improvements in education? This is one of the key-questions behind the aims and scope of this book. In order to answer it, "foundational" issues and questions about school effectiveness are raised and answered: How much do schools really matter? Are school effects consistent and stable when different domains and contexts of schooling are compared? How firm is our knowledge on the school organizational and instructional characteristics that are supposed to "work" in education? And finally, if we think we have some answers to these questions: what are the explanations behind the regularities laid bare by empirical results? In this book recent research results and theoretical interpretations are used in a critical analysis of the knowledge base on school effectiveness. It offers new insights into the most promising levers for school improvements and shows directions for future research. (DIPF/Orig.). |
