| Abstract | A profound web of intertextuality and cultural/religious points of contact unfolds in the depiction of Adam in the Qur'an, its exegesis and the Syriac Cave of Treasures. Through a fragmentary narrative, the Qur'an draws on the existing traditions of its early community, while at the same time giving them a new direction. The exegetes, who have the Qur'an as a text, fill in the fragmentary narratives of biblical characters with insights from traditions. This analysis attempts to identify the Syriac Cave of Treasures as a potential source for the works of exegetes such as Muqatil b. Sulayman and Ibn Garir at-Tabari. A central focus is on the mechanisms of Qur'anic exegesis and, in particular, how the isra'iliyyat traditions are used to derive interpretative meanings from the Qur'anic verses. It also explores the potential interaction of the exegetes with the Syriac Cave of Treasures, including an analysis of chains of authorities that may indicate links with Syriac Christians. The findings underline the importance of the Syriac Cave of Treasures for both Islamic and Christian studies, especially in the Syriac-Christian context. |
