Abstract | The derivative is a central concept in high school and at university analysis courses. There is an ongoing debate about how to teach this concept effectively. Many studies show that students are struggling with the understanding of different calculus concepts, including the derivative. At the same time, some research papers report on how intuitive images of limits might interfere with the formal definition. Nowadays in Hungary precise definitions using the epsilon-delta conceptis presented not only at university, but to high school students as well. The above-mentioned ambiguity led to the under-taking of this study, which is about high school and university students' understanding of the connection between basicfunction properties and the derivative at a point. In order to examine their understanding a test of 12 questions was devel-oped. Data was collected from a total of 117 high school and university students. Results were analysed for each questionindividually and in the case of some questions a comparison between the performance of high school and university stu-dents was performed as well. The overall performance of high school and university students was compared, too. It produced one of the most interesting and unexpected outcomes namely that there is no significant difference between theoverall performance of high school and university students. |
