Abstract | School outcomes are of major importance for the future educational and occupational career of people. However, their influences also reach much further and have been found to be determinants of various life outcomes and consequently social inequality (Cutler & Lleras-Muney, 2010; Meara et al., 2008; Nagel et al., 2008; Strenze, 2007). It is therefore not only interesting but also necessary to understand how interindividual differences in school outcomes arise and thus be able to set up and implement interventions that truly benefit students. Behavioural genetic research has found school outcomes to be influenced by genetics as well as shared and non-shared environmental factors (Gottschling et al., 2012; Johnson et al., 2006; Shakeshaft et al., 2013). However, the estimates of these influences vary throughout the literature depending on the age of the study sample, the school domain, the measurement instrument and study designs that were implemented.
