Abstract | This chapter describes curriculum developments in Hungary after the regime change in 1989. These three decades have been a period of continuous change, in both regulatory structure and in the curriculum. It is difficult to describe these changes as a reform, however, because the change has not always been in the same direction or in line with modern educational trends. The alternating direction of curriculum change is due to opposing political and policy change. The roots of these changes began long before the regime change in 1989 and it is necessary to start with a discussion of the reform processes of the last two decades of Hungarian socialism. This is when the monolithic educational system was being dismantled and innovative concepts introduced. |
