Abstract | Comparative analyses of educational phenomena often include a strong element of contrast as well. In other words, the con? ict in the comparison is what often becomes the focus of the analysis. It is more interesting when there are differences than when there are similarities. Difference is mysterious, intriguing, and most de? nitely dangerous. But, what is more often interesting and dangerous in comparative education research are the ways that similarities arise, when stark differences would be the logical or contextually appropriate observation. Comparative analyses of school textbooks provide this same kind of tension in that there is much to contrast among textbook content as well as the ways that textbook content is developed. But perhaps most intriguing among textbook researchers are the ways that school textbooks- as an extension of school curricula- are manipulated either explicitly or implicitly to achieve goals and agendas of the dominant state. |
