AbstractEpistemologically speaking, exegesis (tafsir), as a discipline of Qur'anic sciences, and the purposes (maqasid) concept of Islamic jurisprudence have a different approach and methodology within the inner-Islamic scholarly discourse. Nevertheless, these two established doctrines of Islamic theology may have a common purpose - to explore the meaning of the Qur'an as a text of revelation according to its goals and purposes. Against this background, this article endeavours to put maqasid concepts, which tend to be conceived in terms of jurisprudence, at the service of Qur'anic interpretation in such a way that the gap between Qur'anic and jurisprudential studies is, at best, bridged. For this concern of hermeneutics to function in the area of tension between tafsir and maqasid, both conceptual and methodological assumptions of Qur'anic hermeneutics - in the traditional Islamic sense of hermeneutics - must be met. The article addresses these assumptions by first summarising and presenting the types of tafsir in scholarly discourse and the maqasid doctrine in the sense of jurisprudence and theology. Subsequently, a detailed presentation is given of the Qur'anic interpretation in the context of the postulated maqasid doctrine, in the sense of purposive maqasidi exegesis (al-tafsir al-maqasidi), as a new genre of tafsir with its intended characteristics, i.e. efficiency and effectiveness. In this regard, the thematic conceptualisation of tafsir has an important role to play.
