Abstract | Throughout history, maritime commercial activity has brought people from varying nationalities, cultures, and languages into communication. Such daily multilingual and multicultural contact among those involved in maritime activities has created the need for a common language to enhance communicative effectiveness and ensure the proper functioning of this commercial system. However, maritime trade means not only economic cooperation but also a particular way of life, especially for those charged with the navigation and operation of ships, where the terminology used for daily communications is specific and unique to this context, and where the effectiveness of these communications can determine the safety of people and the integrity of the environment. For the improvement of safety in maritime activities, the International Maritime Organization has developed a series of international standards to regularize the use of the English language as a common language in this environment for ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communications. Nonetheless, and given that it is, while not sufficient, certainly necessary to understand the problematics of shipboard communication, the author offers an analysis of communication needs in multilingual crews. Such analysis will help us better understand how and why communication problems arise among crew members and how these problems can affect normal operations of the ship and put its safety and that of the crew at risk.
