Abstract | The article documents strategy, affective reactions, and metacognitive assessments of beginning French students encountering their very first French reading exercise via think-aloud and recall protocols. The findings of this exploratory investigation suggest that beginning second language (L2) readers transfer strategies from the first language (L1) and/or other L2 reading experiences to new reading situations, and are able to manage authentic texts from as early as 12 hours of instruction.
