| Abstract | A major current issue in early bilingual development is whether the two languages develop in a separate manner (Separate Development Hypothesis), or whether the two language systems interact with each other in the course of development. The reported study tests if the Separate Development Hypothesis holds true for children acquiring Japanese and English, a combination yet to be examined. Longitudinal observations of two Japanese/English bilingual children were conducted for a period of six months. The results show that there are no signs of interaction between the two languages in the areas investigated, indicating that Japanese/English bilingual children develop each of their two grammars in a language-specific manner. This study thus adds linguistic variety to the body of evidence supporting the Separate Development Hypothesis, which increases the possibility that it is a universal principle for early bilingual acquisition.
