| Abstract | It is characteristic of modern languages that the majority of lexical expressions (terms) constituting their LGP and LSP lexicons are coined on the basis of expression-units already present in the language in question. As a direct consequence, most terms have a literal meaning relating in some non-arbitrary (motivated), but never entirely predictable, way to the lexical meaning(s) actually conveyed by them. The practical significance of this circumstance has long been recognized in the field of LSP and terminology management due to its immediate impact on various key activities in this field, one of them being LSP translation. At the same time, a number of questions basic to a more precise definition and adequate description of the semantic parameter(s) at issue have not yet been clearly formulated, and certainly not adequately resolved. The article suggests one possible path for further theoretical development. It takes as its starting point the account of literal meaning or Sinnform offered by Eugen Wüster in (1959/60). This approach is further developed and refined on the basis of a cognitive reinterpretation of the causal theory of reference as stated by Devitt & Sterelny (1987). The explanatory power of the latter model of explanation is thereafter demonstrated by addressing the problem of "false friends" in LSP translation. Finally, certain other potential applications of the theoretical framework presented are briefly considered. (Verlag, adapt.). |
