Abstract | The paper discusses the benefits of Intelligent Language Tutoring Systems (ILTS). While ILTSs are labour-intensive and require linguistic and programming knowledge, they provide error-specific feedback and flexibility in handling student answers. By way of example, the paper introduces the German Tutor, a Web-based ILTS for introductory German. A recent study with two introductory German classes provides an error typology and emphasizes the importance of an adaptive language learning system that considers user diversity. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of the research possibilities built into the system. (Verlag, adapt.). |
