Abstract | The article analyses German, Spanish and Chilean curricula and textbooks on their narratives about Christopher Columbus. International public protest on monuments to Columbus critized historical-political presentations of his "discovery" and postcolonial studies demand a focus on the view of indigenous people. The proposal focusses on 58 curricula and 24 history textbooks and their presentation of Columbus in international perspective. It compares how textbooks realize curricular requirements. Two results can be concluded: First, curricula use a multi-perspective view on Columbus. Second, Spanish and German textbooks describe Columbus as discoverer and present the contact to indigenous people from an eurocentric view whereas Chilean textbooks present a critical perspective on Columbus. |
