The early writings on educational sociology by P. Bourdieu and his colleagues have often been used as a starting point for empirical and theoretical analyses of educational disadvantage based on cultural background. In this context, the concepts of unequal cultural capital and the different "cultural fit" of school and the familial learning habitus are central. This article follows a different path, by looking at the proportion of educational institutions themselves within social reproduction. For Bourdieu/Passeron, it was the question of the "inner logic" of institutions that constructs educational disadvantage based on cultural background. This article reconstructs on three layers of the educational system - the immediate interaction of teachers and students, the organisation and the overall system - how this "inner logic" is to be understood sociologically, how these different logics interlock to create background-related educational disadvantage and simultaneously conceal this connection. For this special case of higher education at hand, Bourdieu/Passeron have advanced a pattern for institutional analyses, which can be used productively for all levels of the school system. |
