Abstract	This paper discusses object deletion in German non-finite directive clauses (typically found, e.g., in cooking recipes and on information signs and product labels) and provides an analysis as topic trop. Based on a collection of attested examples, it is argued that deleted objects fulfil all the requirements of topics that can potentially undergo topic drop. Deleted objects can be analysed as continued topics, which refer to that antecedent within the linguistic or extra-linguistic context that is most salient at a given location within the physical vicinity or at a given time within a series of events. Deleted objects in on-finite directive clauses also fulfil the general syntactic requirement that, in German, topic drop is licensed in the left-most position of a sentence only. The syntactic distribution of overt topics in non-finite directive clauses provides evidence for an articulated topic domain at the left periphery of these clauses. If the presented topic drop analysis of deleted objects is on the right track, the assumptions of idiosyncratic features of the syntactic construction or strict register-bound licensing are not necessary. Rather, the phenomenon can be subsumed under a more general and independently evidenced process, which is not restricted to the sentence type of non-finite directive clauses as such. (Verlag).
