Abstract | After a brief introduction to the topic, the paper outlines the current research situation in the field of foreign-language writing. It highlights the dynamic development that this field of research has taken over the last two decades and gives a concise overview of the most important aspects dealt with so far, including research methods. The paper also identifies some obvious problems involved in this dynamic development. In the second part, the author presents some selected research findings and discusses possible consequences for the practice of teaching writing competence. The main focus is on the relationship between writing and foreign-language learning and in particular the question of how the classical perspective of learning to write can be supplemented by the more recent perspective of writing to learn.
