| Abstract | It is notable that post-war Japan and South Korea pioneered many of the techniques China uses today to transfer foreign technology, albeit on a smaller scale and with less drama. Both countries are now victims of the same predations. Japan in particular was an early target of China's transfer efforts. In addition to the Japanese government's own complicity in acceding to China's overtures for technology-a role it is now regretting-the country hosts an active diaspora community that facilitates transfers of technology and, importantly, the know-how behind it. Korea, for its part, is learning the cost of ceding technology for market access, as its own high-tech industries begin to lose their competitiveness. In sum, China's strategies to acquire technology in Northeast Asia mimic patterns observed worldwide, thus providing a template for its activities elsewhere. This chapter concludes the section focusing on activities in some major S&T regions around the world. (HRK / Abstract übernommen). |
