| Abstract | The first national educational standards for foreign language learning in German schools at lower secondary level were published in 2003 and 2004. The standards were developed in close alignment with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR, Council of Europe 2001) and have had a considerable impact on both the practice of (and academic discourse on) competence-based foreign language education, as well as research in the field of L2 learning and teaching in Germany. In this paper, the authors discuss the apparent need to update the original standards, and analyse the potential relevance of concepts, scales of general and communicative language competences and competence level descriptors in the Companion Volume to the CEFR (Council of Europe 2018a) for future revisions of the standards.
