Abstract | Present digital media use in schools is frequently painted as conventional. In order to better understand the gulf between digital media's potential and its practical implementation in history teaching, this paper firstly advocates abandoning the special media concept used in history education as it focusses strongly on content while neglecting the material and technological aspects of the media. Based on a cultural studies understanding of media as a form of communication (Mock 2006, Gitelman 2006) the paper will then describe empirically observed media practices in history lessons. It becomes apparent that such practices can chafe against historical methods and undermine the intentions of history teaching. Despite all promises of intuitive digital learning the use of digital media observed in the classroom increased the content-oriented approach of pupils, which is also a problem well known from lessons using textbooks. |
