(Autorenreferat; BIBB-Doku). "The German qualification-based education system differs from organisation-based systems in that it is highly standardised and hierarchical, and in that it clearly distinguishes between vocational and higher education. The German system has a low proportion of academics compared to the organisation-based education systems of other European countries. In OECD comparisons, this is viewed as negative: there are calls for more equal opportunities in the education system and for a higher pro-portion of academics. In academic further education, efforts are under way to make the system more permeable for professionally qualified people who have not followed a conventional academic path. This is done by creating more opportunities for university admission and taking into account previous experience. This transitional strategy of opening up higher education can be seen as compensation for an employment policy which ignores traditional pillars, and is not viable in the medium term. In the nationwide/regional competition 'Advancement through education: open universities', the collaborative project 'WeiterbildungsCampus Magdeburg' looked from five research perspectives at the question of how academic further education deals with this in terms of studying ability, enrolment of students, transfer of curricula, and developing formats and organisation. The empirical results are presented in line with a common theoretical model in academic further education. At the intersection of the subject-oriented micro level and the organisation-oriented meso level, there is a dynamic space in which boundaries are both removed and imposed - in which different types of academic further education jostle for position."
