Abstract	If one examines German and French history text books there are striking differences in illustration particularly in the 19th century until the sixties of the 20th century. It can be assumed that the technical standards were more or less the same in both countries, however German history text books were generally less illustrated than French ones. It will be examined when this fact changed and how books of that kind are represented today with regards to illustration. After a discussion about the causes of that difference the message of the images has to be assessed. Which function do all these images take on? Are they only strewn in the text, are they used to illustrate the text or are they used heuristically? Images are sources in historical sense. This also means that dealing with images in history text books has to be accurate, i.e. images must not be cut without stating that the presented image is just a detail. In promoting the visual literacy standards have been demanded, which are unfortunately not always maintained.
