| Abstract | The respective status of the neighbouring languages Polish and German is rather different in either country as far as the number of speakers and their political and communicative status is concerned. German is firmly positioned in the Polish educational system and protected by the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages. The authors discuss the status of Polish in present-day Germany: the legal and administrative basis is described and analysed for all parts of political developments concerning heritage languages, Polish has received increasing attention in Germany and has become part of the curricula in six federal states (Bundesländer). What exactly does this mean for the neighbouring language Polish? What are the trends and challenges particularly in regions on either side of the Polish-German border? Some recommendations are formulated as to what can be done in order to foster interest and to set new incentives for learning the neighbouring language Polish. (Verlag, adapt). |
