(Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku). "The demographic trends of the last decades often lead to the apprehension of a labour shortage throughout Europe because of a decrease in working age population. This article aims to contribute to this discussion by examining whether it is really the demographic development or in fact the qualification of the labour force that is important for adequate labour supply. Therefore a case study was conducted for the electronics industry in Germany, the Netherlands and Poland. It shows by using secondary data and interviews with various companies that it is indeed mostly the changing needs and supply of qualified workers that lead to this perceived lack of qualified workers instead of demographic developments. Reasons for this are the differences in vocational education systems in each country. In countries where the vocational education system is closer to the industry, like in Germany, the qualification problems are perceived as less severe than in countries where vocational education is mostly directed by public actors. The article also shows that the firms in each country react very differently to these challenges depending on their national and regional environment." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku). |
