Abstract | Whole-school approaches to student health take several different forms and labels within the literature (e.g., Health Promoting Schools; Comprehensive School Health Programs; Coordinated School Health), however, regardless of the model's designation each model or strategy relies on the multi-component approach in which all aspects of the school community are potentially important in establishing healthy lifestyle behaviours of students. The purpose of this review was to summarize of a range of whole-school health promotion interventions conducted in high schools. Four programs conducted in seven countries will be reviewed. The whole-school approaches summarized in this review include: LEAP (Lifestyle Education Activity Program; Pate et al., 2005), DOiT (Dutch Obesity Intervention in Teenagers; Singh et al., 2009), It's Your Move (Mathews, Moodie, Simmons, & Swinburn, 2010), and Health Promoting Secondary Schools [HPSS] (Wharf Higgins, Voss, Naylor, Gibbons, Rhodes, et al., 2013). For each of the four interventions we include: (a) an overview of the research design, goals and intervention components, theoretical framework and results; and (b) a summary of support strategies used for intervention implementation. This review will help inform the development of effective whole-school health interventions strategies for high school students. (geändert). (Autor). |
