(Orig.). Background: [The research] focused on the question why, even though AAC has been present in Germany for 25 years, it is not used much more effectively for students with intellectual disabilities. The need for AAC exists, as do school laws requiring its implementation. Aim: The aim of [the study] is to discover the reasons why implementation of AAC has failed and to optimize quality of implementation in the educational institutions in question. Methods: To investigate the reasons a triangulation methodology consisting of interviews, a questionnaire and the standard attitude scale PARCCA [...] was used. On the basis of these results, a training program supporting users was developed and assessed, also by an attitude scale. Results: The study showed that the main reason for the lack of effective use of AAC rooted in insecurities in using the technology. The consequent feeling of failure led to a negative attitude towards AAC and a further degeneration of its employment in the classroom. The training program arising from these findings emphasized practical experience, which proved successful; the general attitude towards AAC had improved greatly after the first two trial runs. Conclusions: The implications for the future training in the area of AAC are obvious: more practical experiences must be provided! (Orig.). |
