AbstractIn most foreign language classrooms and grammar books, subjunctive I and subjunctive II are taught as the typical morpho-syntactic means on which speakers rely when reporting someone else's speech. However, speakers of German utilize a much broader variety of linguistic resources to quote others in interaction. Their use is sensitive to specific contexts and to the interactional functions to which it is put. Studies have shown that speakers use different types of quotation formats in order to accomplish certain activities or to distinguish different activities from each other. For example, through reported discourse, participants in interaction can elicit information, deliver information, or position themselves in the discourse. Consequently, teaching reported discourse as it is done in actual, real-time talk is important in second/foreign language classrooms to foster a student's ability to communicate effectively. In the remainder of this article, the authors will first introduce both quotation formats covered in the teaching unit, namely reporting a past decision in troubles-tellings and the quotation format und ich so/und er so. Then, they outline the different instructional phases in which their teaching unit is organized, referencing specific activities of the unit in chronological order as they do so. Last, they provide notes for teachers, which contextualize the individual tasks and activities featured in the appendix. (Verlag, adapt.).
