Abstract | Primary EFL classrooms are based on a communicative approach to language learning. Explicit grammar is not regarded as a vital aspect of teaching a foreign language to young learners. Many teachers fear that their learners might pick up "wrong" structures when allowing too open communication in their EFL classrooms. However, implicit learning of (interlanguage) grammar plays an important role in any instructed setting. Findings from Second Language Acquisition (SLA) research contribute to making foreign language teaching more efficient. Based on examples of learner language this paper demonstrates what an SLA-informed approach to primary EFL classrooms might look like and in what way it supports language learning in a learner-centred way.
