Abstract | The term 'Physical Literacy' has gained considerable traction in the sport, physical activity and Physical Education domains. The application of Physical Literacy (PL) in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia has mainly focused on developing fundamental movement skills among children. Beyond fundamental movement skills, few programs, curricula and organizations have identified the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary for developing adults that integrate purposeful physical activity into their lifestyle, which is central to Margaret Whitehead's original concept of PL. This brief review provides a short history of PL, describes selected applications of PL in four countries, and examines how these applications align with the concept of PL presented by Margaret Whitehead.
