| Abstract | Not only in the recent past but for several decades now, a shift in language learning from a teacher-led to a more learner-centred approach has been observed. This required a redefinition of the teacher's role and of teaching competencies and skills. Although terms such as counsellor, adviser or facilitator are frequently used within this context, there is still a lack of differentiated descriptions of specific competence profiles and training programs for teachers. Following a brief analysis of the distinctive features of language learning in Higher Education, the article presents the concepts of language learning coaching as an approach that aims at enhancing the perception of language learners, enabling their decision-making ability and the development of alternative actions. The authors analyse activities and the intervention tools of a coach or a counsellor and derive from that a comprehensive requirement profile of coaches or counsellors. The article concludes with a first attempt at showing that teachers may well benefit from a set of core counselling or coaching skills in their everyday teaching practice. (Verlag). |
