Abstract	How can the decision to establish the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) be understood in the larger context of the Olympic value system? Is the YOG an attempt to consolidate Olympic goals and values, or does the event represent something new? What, more precisely, is the relationship between the YOG and the normative foundation of the Olympic Movement? A first step towards answering these questions is to take a closer look at the official version of Olympic goals and values as expressed by the IOC itself, or what is referred to as the value system of 'Olympism'. Second, I will look at the key ideals of Olympism in relation to both the Olympic Games (OG) and the YOG. A key finding is that the YOG seems to come considerably closer to Olympic ideals than does the OG. It remains to be seen whether the YOG will become a sustainable part of the Olympic Movement in the time to come. (geändert). (Autor).
